The Interurban trains were a division of the Illinois Terminal Rail Road. These train/trolley cars allowed passengers to move freely from Peoria to East Peoria, Bloomington, Lincoln, Springfield, Decatur, Champaign, Urbana, Danville, St. Louis, Mo. and intermediate points. Pekin was served by a different line, with a similar name, the Peoria Terminal, which ran as an electric interurban line only until the 1920's.  Some of its track was then de-electrified and remained in freight service and owned by the Rock Island (CRI&P) until it was washed out by flooding in the 1960's or 70's.  Galesburg was served by steam, later diesel trains of the Burlington (CB&Q, later BN, now BNSF). Info provided by Bob Eagelston.

The Illinois Terminal Station was located on S. Adams St and after the station closed, it became the central Peoria Police Station. But from the late 1800's through the mid 1940's, these train cars ran to small towns for pennies. They crossed on McKinley Bridge, just South of the Toledo, Peoria & Western Rail Road bridge. Both of the rail bridges were immediately south of the Franklin Street Bridge (aka: Lower Free Bridge). All 3 were within 1000 feet of each other.

The McKinley Bridge was razed in the mid 1940's when Peoria's streetcars stopped running.

The TP&W Railroad Bridge was razed in the 1980's.

The Franklin St. Bridge was razed in the 1990's and has been replaced by the Bob Michael Bridge of modern design.

Interurban Car#367 crossing Illinois River...bridge was in use until 1951 and was razed sometime after 1951. The last Peoria city streetcar pulled into the barn just after midnight on October 3, 1946. Info provided by Bob Eagelston.
