When a child his parents James and Martha Smith moved to Illinois, settling first in Tazewell county and after a short time moved to Peoria county where his parents lived and died and William grew to manhood.
He was married to Miss Martha Bush in 1860. To this union eight children were born, three boys of whom are living, John G. of Wichita, Kansas, George and James of Princeville. Mrs. Martha Smith died in 1876.
July 4, 1878 Mr. Smith married to Miss Carrie Taylor, daughter of B. S. Taylor of Princeville. To this union were born, Charles W. of Dunlap; Frank A. of Chicago; Lula B. Martin of Denver Colorado.
Mr. Smith moved from his farm to Princeville in 1892, where he has since resided. He has three brothers. George, Joseph and James and two sisters, Mrs. James Harrison and Mrs. Frances Hemendollar, who survive him; also has 19 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
The passing of Mr. Smith removes another of our early settlers, having lived here for eighty-five years, almost a century in which he lived to see the most wonderful changes ever looked upon by mortal man. He was a charter member of the Old Settlers Union of Princeville and Vicinity.
Mr. Smith belonged to the old school, which our fathers belonged—industry, honesty, loyalty, love of home and friends. With economy these men f former days made out of the rough material which they found around them homes worth living in.
