John Hardy, One of Area’s Oldest Men Dies at Laura Sat.

Funeral services for John A. Hardy, 88, one of the pioneer residents of Peoria county, were held at the Laura Methodist church at 2:30 p. m. Monday, June 16, with Rev. Dickerson officiating.

Mr. Hardy died at his home near Laura Saturday.

The Masonic lodge of Princeville held graveside services at the Brimfield cemetery in honor of Mr. Hardy’s memory. Pallbearers, members of the lodge were; Henry Malone, Forest Taylor, Paul Kneer, Clarence Carter, Clinton Gessel and Don Webster.

John A. Hardy, son of John and Ellen Woodhull Hardy, was born in Manchester, Ill., October 23, 1858. He was one of a family of 12 children. In the fall of 1872, at the age of 14, he with his parents came by wagon to a farm north of Laura, where he grew to manhood.

He attended the Garrison school. He was road commissioner for 18 years and served on the school board for 16 years. He had been a member of the Masonic lodge of Princeville for 36 years. His favorite hobby was reading the Bible.

January 1, 1895, he was married to Katie M. Whiting of Kickapoo and came directly to his home south of Laura, living there 52 years. His wife preceded him in death 12 years ago.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Mabel Shane and Mrs. Nina Whittaker both of Laura; one brother James of Colorado; one grandson Leland Whittaker and three great grandsons, Edward Lee and Harold and Gerald (twins) Whittaker all of Laura.
