Elderly Princeville Matron Dies Friday

Shock of Fall Suffered Recently Fatal to Mrs. Emma Hammer


Emma Virginia Metzel, eldest child of William and Julia Metzel, was born at York, Pennsylvania, on January 26th, 1850 and died at Princeville, Illinois on May 1, 1931, having reached the ripe of 81 years, 3 months and 4 days. Her father having died, she came to Princeville, Illinois with her mother about the year of 1856.

On August 29, 1867, she was married to Henry Hammer of Princeville. To this union ten children were born, all of whom survive the mother, except one daughter who passed away in infancy. Mr. Hammer died February 19, 1912. Two brothers, Robert and Aquilla Metzel and one sister Mrs. Lillie Hammer Wear, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Hammer joined the Methodist church at an early age and was devoted and loyal throughout her life. She was regular in her attendance at public worship, making every effort to attend, often when it seemed to others that she was physically unable tot do so.

Mr. Hammer was also an honorary member of Captain John F. French Fortress of the National Daughters of the G.A.R.

Mrs. Hammer is survived by one brother Elmer Hammer, of this place and the following sons and daughters: Mrs. Julia Stewart , Charles Hammer, Henry Hammer, Miss Lillie Custer, Mrs. Cora Harbers and Mrs. Della Koch, all of Peoria; William H. Hammer and Fred E. Hammer, of Princeville and John Hammer of Edelstein. She is survived by 24 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
