GREAT GATHERING AT A. D. EDWARDS FUNERAL An assemblence that taxed the capacity of the Presbyterian church attended the funeral of A. D. Edwards at 2:30 o’clock last Friday afternoon. The great outpouring of friends coming from all parts of the surrounding country as well as the village, gave evidence of the high regard everyone cherished for the departed. The floral tributes were unusually bountiful and of rare beauty. Rev. John Acheson, pastor of the Presbyterian church conducted the service, reading words of comfort and consolation from the scriptures and dwelling upon the excellent qualities of the life of a man who has passed out of this life. Mrs. Henry L. Mathews and Mrs. Silas Willard blended their voices in two beautiful numbers, with Edward Auten Jr., at the organ. The funeral cortege proceeded to the place of interment in Princeville cemetery. Archibald Dalrymple Edwards, son of Thomas Lewis and Sarah Jane Edwards, was born August 22, 1854 and entered into his rest on January 4, 1922 at 5:30 a.m. at the Methodist hospital in Peoria, Illinois. At the time of his death he had been 67 years 4 months and 12 days on his earthy pilgrimage. On November 19th 1884 he was united in marriage with Julia Etta Blanchard and this union was blessed with six children. He united with the Presbyterian church of Princeville on profession of his faith in Jesus Christ on November 9th, 1902 under the pastorate of Rev. Mr. Phillips and was always a consistent, honored member though in later years on account of his impaired hearing, was not able to enjoy the public services in the church. His entire life was spent in Princeville and vicinity and for nearly seventeen years he was the manager of the Monica Grain Elevator Company and his long service with this company gave testimony in itself that he was testimony that he was dependable man. In earlier years he was always active in the Community’s life in helping every good cause. At one he was postmaster and served several term as a member of the board of supervisors of Peoria county. As a member of this board the same principles of honesty, sincerity and courageous integrity actuated his every act in private life. Arch Edwards was always the same golden rule his motto and true to the inherited principles of his sturdy Scotch ancestors who had adopted a Coat of Arms bearing the significant inscription “Firm as a Rock.” These charcteristics won for him the respect of a large circle of friends, not only in Princeville and Monica, but wherever he was known. During his illness he made a brave stand to prolong his life as he wanted to live on and enjoy the fellowship of his family to whom he was devoted, but when he knew that recovery was not possible he was resigned to the will of his Master and said, “Thy will be done.” He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Etta Edwards and their six children, Forest G., Thomas L., O. Delwin, Mrs. C. J. Meyers, Amy and Ellen and by three grandchildren and four sisters: Mina D., Margaret E. Sophia A. Campbell and Etta. None knew better his sterling worth and character than these who survive of his loved ones and the memories of the past will serve as a solace in these days of loneliness and “since they would not bring their loved one back, they can buckle on their armor for a more diligent service in the name of the God whom he served and when their course is run they too can say ‘I am ready to go to Him.” |
