Death of John H. Brooks

John H. Brooks, an old and respected citizen of Peoria, died Friday evening at 7 o'clock at his residence, 108 North Elizabeth street of a stroke of paralysis suffered at 10:30 o'clock on the morning of Wednesday preceeding while he was waiting for a street car in Eblem's hardware store on the corner of Adams and Walnut street, and he remained unconscious until the time of his death. Six months ago he had another stroke. Four years ago, one of his brothers Wallace Brooks, died of paralysis. John H. Brooks was born on Greenfield, Ohio, and he would have been 65 years old on the 31st of July next. He came to Peoria in 1842, and engaged in the manufacture of blinds and doors, He was the partner of Buck for fifteen or twenty years. For six years past he followed his trade as a carpenter. On October 26, 1850, he was married to Elizabeth Tapping. His wife survives him, as do also four sons, John W. of Dawson county, Montana, George C., of Peoria, who manufactures brooms, Lincoln Grant, who resides at Sioux City, Iowa, and Taylor T., who lives at home in Peoria, and one daughter, Mrs., Rose Johnson, of this city. The deceased belonged to the Baptist church, and was its oldest male member at the time of his death. He lived a consistent Christian life. He was an active temperance worker, and an ardent prohibitionist. It was his last wish that his red ribbon, which he had put on at the Bontecue meetings, should be attached to the coat he was buried in. Two sisters, Mrs. J. H. Patterson and Mrs. Wm. Stevenson, and a brother reside at Eden, Peoria county. The funeral will take place from the residence this afternoon at 2 o'clock.
