| AMANDA MILLER BATES BORN HERE IS
DEAD Death came to Mrs. Homer Bates at her home, 507 Normal Ave., Bloomington, ill., at 7 o’clock Wednesday morning April 7th 1920. She had been on poor health for several years, the duration of her last illness being about two weeks, death resulting from a complication of diseases. Miss Amanda Miller was born near Princeville, Peoria County, Ill., June 11, 1853, being the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Christian Miller, old settlers of Peoria County. She received her education in the country school. She was a brilliant scholar and student having taught her first school at the age of fifteen years. From the she taught school at intervals and worked her way through Eureka College, later attending the State Normal College. She lacked three months of graduating at the time of her marriage. She was well all over Peoria County as a successful teacher having taught at Wyoming, Duncan, Monica, Peoria and one year in California. She had traveled extensively and enjoyed her trips from an educational standpoint. She was author of a book on Travels, published a few years ago. She was a very industrious woman, being in keeping busy; was a lover of art and in addition to looking after her home, she did china and oil painting and many other kinds of fancy work. In later years here health kept her very much at home, but she was not idle and did not give up, was cheerful, enjoyed her home and friends; she was very charitable, never forgetting those in need. On September 3. 1899, Miss Miller was married to Homer S. Bates, of Normal, Illinois. She was converted when quite young, joining the Methodist church, but after her marriage she was united with the Baptist church with her husband. Mrs. Bates was a devout Christian woman and was a worker in Sunday school and church. She leaves her husband, one stepson Roy C. Bates of Normal, Ill., two brothers, Edgar Miller of Wyoming, Ill. and Albert Miller of Hayfield, Minn. Four nieces, Mrs. Edna Gingrich, Duncan, Ill.; Mrs. Sadie Reidel, Hayfield, Minn., Uriah G. Anderson, Alberta, Canada; two sisters-in-laws, Mrs. Emma Blake, Normal, Ill. and Mrs. Elizabeth Estep, of Princeville, besides other relatives and friends. Impressive funeral services were held at the Baptist church of Normal at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon. Many beautiful floral tributes spoke of the high esteem in which a good life was held. Interment was in the Bloomington cemetery. |
