Military History of Peoria County
This listing of
Peoria County Veterans was compiled from several
sources: Various cemetery readings that were verified by the
The Illinois State Archives database
of Military Veterans, the History of Peoria County published in 1880 and the
1956 Veterans' Honor Roll.
Please Note: Since not all cemeteries have been
completely read and transcribed, this
list of veterans is not
complete. Some of the spellings and dates in the Illinois
State Archives database do not exactly match those in the cemetery readings, so it is up to the
researcher to determine what data is correct. We will update this listing when new
tombstones are found.
If you know of any veterans buried in Peoria County
that are not listed here, or have a tombstone photo that you would like to share, please
email me and I will gladly
add them to the list.
In
Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae,
MD
(1872-1918)
Canadian Army

In Flanders Fields the
poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short
days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel
with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
