(Peoria Daily Transcript, Tuesday, June 7, 1870, submitted by J. Crandell)
Death of an Old Citizen.
Mr. Anastase Robin, a well-known citizen of this city, and
father-in-law of H. G. Farrell, died at 6 o'clock yesterday morning of dropsy,
after a very painful illness of three weeks.
Mr. Robin was born in Paris in November, 1793, and was
consequently nearly 77 years of age. He belonged to an aristocratic family in
France and was obliged to fly the country an account of political troubles. He
first settled in Wisconsin, and in 1838 removed to this part of the country,
pre-empting 80 acres of land on the Tazewell shore of the river, opposite the
city. He remained there until about twelve years ago, putting up a saw and grist
mill in what was known as floating claims. Bad times came on and he was
considerably straightened in circumstances but saw better times before he
removed to this city.
His wife died several years ago, and his only child was
the late Mrs. H. G. Farrell. He has a brother residing in France, who is largely
interested in porcelain manufacture, but beyond these he had no near relatives.
Mr. Robin was an eminent scholar, master of a half a
dozen different languages. He preserved to the last that peculiar etiquette that
marks the French people generally, and was one of his most striking
characteristics. His funeral will take place this afternoon, at four o'clock,
from the residence of H. G. Farrell, Esq., corner of Madison and Hancock
streets.
