Andrew J. Mart
(c. 1837-1868)

 

Andrew J. Mart was born about 1837 in Clinton County, Ohio, the son of Wesley Mart and Elizabeth Groom. The 1850 Census shows him with father Wesley, mother Eliza, and six siblings in Washington Township, Clinton County, Ohio. Andrew married Frances and the 1860 Census shows them with daughters Florence and Ida living in Perry Township, Clinton County, Indiana.

Andrew J. Mart enlisted Private Company I, 63rd Indiana Infantry August 9, 1862 and was mustered out September 19, 1963. According to Headstones Provided for Deceased Union Civil War Veterans, he died May 18, 1868, and was to be buried in Princeville, Illinois (the Campbell Cemetery is seven miles west of Princeville).

The 1870 Census shows Frances Mart and two year old Bertie living in Maquon Township, Knox County, Illinois. In 1880 Bertie Sanford was living with adoptive parents Jacob Sanford and Lida in Prairie City, McDonough County, Illinois. In 1890 Bertie C. Sanford filed a Civil War Pension claim as a minor of Andrew J. Mart, Pvt, Co. I, 63rd Ind. Inf. In 1896 Bertie Secelia Sanford married Robert M. Wood in McDonough County. Their son Lawrence Wood (1901-1988) died in Urbana, Illinois.
