MAYO, CHARLES; Farmer; born in Devizes, England, January 20, 1823. He is the son of Joseph and Mary (Brown) Mayo, both natives of England, the latter of Oxford. Charles Mayo’s father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were all named Joseph, and they were Episcopal clergymen. Joseph, the father of Charles, had a family of ten children. On May 9, 1833, he sailed from England with his family and arrived in New York on June 9th. He went West to Cleveland, Ohio, and later had charge of a parish and owned a farm at Liverpool, in the same State. In 1841?, he came to Peoria County and invested at Peoria and Jubilee. His sons purchased land on Sections 32 and 33 in Radnor Township. On September 3, 1856, Charles Mayo was married in Jubilee Township to Fanny Wade, who was born in Manchester, England, the daughter of Charles Taylor Wade, a graduate of Dublin University, and Isabella (Hamilton) Wade, both natives of Ireland. Mrs. Mayo died in 1870. There were five children: Josephine Charlotte has charge of the domestic affairs at “Sunny Side.” The summer residence of Mr. Mayo, where he has an elegant place on his farm of 208 acres, and where he spends his summers. Mary Virginia is the wife of Henry M. Goss, of Peoria, and at her home Mr. Mayo passes a portion of the year. Fannie Wade is the wife of Charles E. Goss, of Peoria. The two sons are Charles Hamilton and William Francis. Mr. Mayo is a member of the Episcopal Church, an independent voter and a member of the Grange. He has been School Director several terms. Mr. Mayo has visited England seven times since he first came to America; his last visit being in 1894.
